In typical Florida fashion, many locals were at Lakeland's Circle B Bar Reserve Wednesday, April 13, to witness an 11- or 12-foot alligator make a smaller gator its breakfast.
Photographer Octavia Heart was looking for ospreys when she stumbled upon the gator-on-gator action. She estimates that the smaller gator was 7 feet long.
"I watched him for about an hour eat half of the little guy and he took the other half in a doggy bag to go," Heart told Fox 13.
The big gator must like to play with its food. As you can see in the video it hurls the smaller alligator around in its mouth while trying to consume it.
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, adult alligators usually stick to eating fish, snakes, turtles, small mammals and birds.
However, it's not unusual for alligators to chomp on one of their own. Cannibalism is a major cause of mortality among adult gators.
