As part of our ongoing effort to become the city that will define the 21st Century, we know that Orlando must become America’s new home for transit. This week’s groundbreaking of SunRail’s Phase 2 South expansion brings us one step closer to that goal.
Phase 2 South will offer another 17.2 miles of commuter rail service between the Sand Lake Road station and the Poinciana station. It will also include four new stations including Orange County’s Meadow Woods neighborhood, Osceola Parkway, downtown Kissimmee and Poinciana.
While Phase 2 South is underway, the Florida Department of Transportation is laying the groundwork for Phase 3, a 5.5-mile extension to Orlando International Airport’s $470 million South Automated People Mover Complex and Intermodal Transportation Facility. The new Intermodal Complex, scheduled to be completed in 2018, will accommodate ground transportation including Brightline – All Aboard Florida’s express train service from Miami to Orlando.
In just a few short years from now, SunRail will serve as the backbone of our transit system that ties our Downtown, our airport, Lake Nona and all our major employment sites together. SunRail’s expansion will continue connecting our communities to a variety of affordable alternatives to using a car, and increase access to jobs and opportunity, promote active lifestyles and reduce our impact on the environment.
SunRail’s expansion is a shining examples of how our region continues to work together to provide transit options that make it easier and less expensive for people to move around from the places they live, work and play
